Give Your Under Arms A Break: DIY Deodorant

Summer is officially here; so it's time to say hello to the raging Georgia heat. To make sure I'm covered for the day, I whip out my handle dandy stick of Suave deodorant and apply it in generous amounts. But, I never stopped and thought about what I was actually rubbing on my body. Have you? Not to worry, I'll make it easy for you... CHEMICALS. If you use commercial deodorant like Suave, Degree, or even Dove, you are rubbing toxic chemicals on your body that are absorbed through our skin everyday.

The main ingredients found in deodorant that may cause concern are parabens, aluminum, triclosan, phthalates, and artificial fragrance...OH MY!

(Read more about these ingredients and the adverse effects they have on the body here.)

So in a desperate attempt to find an alternative that actually works, I came across a few options on Amazon. Products labeled " paraben free," "aluminum free," and "fragrance free" looked promising. However, each of these cost $10.99+ for a small stick. So, I decided to research DIY alternatives. I tried a few, but this one is my favorite!

DIY PEPPERMINT DEODORANT

Supplies:

  • roll-on deodorant Stick

  • 1/2 cup witch hazel

  • 10-20 drops of peppermint essential oil (feel free to use another odor-fighting oil like lavender or rosemary oil)

  • 1/2 tsp baking soda (Arrow root powder make be used as an alternative)

  • 1/4 cup aloe vera gel

Directions:

In a small bowl, mix all of the ingredients together. Transfer all ingredients into a roll on deodorant stick. Rub the stick generous under your arms for use. This recipe makes enough for two small roll on sticks of deodorant as shown in the photo.

Ingredient Breakdown:

  • Witch Hazel: used to help close your pores and reduce sweat

  • Essential Oil: Odor fighter

  • Baking Soda: Absorbs moisture and odor

  • Arrow Root Powder: absorbs moisture

  • Aloe Vera Gel: Soothes skin

How much does this cost to make?

Roll-on Stick: $1.48 - Aliexpress

Witch Hazel: $3.64 - Walmart

Essential Oil: $5.08 - Walmart

Baking Soda: $ .55 - Aldi

Aloe Vera Gel: I used the aloe from my aloe vera plant; however the aloe vera gel shown in the picture cost $4

Total Spent: $10.75

I absolutely love this deodorant and have completely replaced my stick of Suave deodorant with it. I can kiss deodorant stains bye-bye and I've noticed that my under arms are super soft. Also, it's effective for up to 48 hours, even with sweating (yep, I tested this myself).

Let's Talk: Have you ever tried an all natural deodorant? If so, did you DIY or buy?
